Machine Repairs
Ward’s Full Service Workroom – In addition to cleaning Oriental Rug Repairs, we offer a full service workroom including binding, serging and fringing.
Binding is done with a machine that resembles a sewing machine. It is meant to secure the ends or sides of a carpet that has been cut or damaged in some way. If you’ve ever had wall to wall carpet installed in your home and had “leftover” pieces that were a size that could be used for a small rug or runner, then “binding” the piece would be the proper thing to do.
We never recommend binding an oriental carpet. For a few pennies more, you oriental can be serged instead. Serging is more aesthetically pleasing and if you have a machine made oriental carpet like a Karastan, its what was originally put on the sides of the rug from the Karastan factory.
Like binding, serging is also done by a machine that resembles a sewing machine. Most machine made carpets like Karastan come with the sides serged directly from the carpet mill. It is what secures the sides (not the fringe ends) of the carpet after it is cut from the loom.
It is normally colored to match the primary color of the carpet. Serging is usually made from wool if the carpet is wool. Today serging is also made from synthetic fiber so that the colors stay consistent from dye lot to dye lot. Unlike binding, serging resembles what would be considered a “thick thread”.
It is fed through the serging machine and “bites” into the side or the end of an oriental or area carpet. Nowadays many people who own oriental carpets opt to have the fringe removed and replaced by serging. Doing this, makes maintenance of the carpet much easier.
We can aslo fringe your new rug or even replace a worn fringe on an existing rug. Let us add some style to your oriental rug with our variety of fringe choices
